Home Rule Charter and Freeholder candidate forums – SEPTEMBER and early OCTOBER 2013

  • September 9th – District 3 Freeholder candidate forum – Sponsored by the Brinnon Boosters  7pm – 9pm  151 Corey lane, Brinnon, WA (1 block so of the fire dept.)
  • September 19th – Thursday- Forum and discussion – 7:00 PM – at the Masonic Lodge, 1350  Jefferson Street, Port Townsend.  Participants:  registered ballot measure committee representatives, Bruce Cowan speaking for “NoCountyCharter” and Valerie Phimister speaking for “Yes! On Home Rule” (she also represents the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County).Co-sponsored by American Association of University Women, Jefferson County; League of Women Voters, Jefferson  County; and The Port Townsend Leader.
  • September 24th – District 3 Freeholder candidate forum – Quilcene community center, Quilcene, WA  6:30 PM – 8:30 PM.  (Just south of town on right)  Sponsored by the Yes! on Home Rule Ballot Committee and the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County.

General Assembly of the CRC meets this Saturday. Join us!

Salish BeeThe General Assembly of the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County, Washington will meet Saturday, August 24th– 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Port Townsend, Washington … 2333 San Juan Avenue. We meet every two weeks. All Friends are welcomed to attend.

 

AGENDA ITEMS INCLUDE:

Updates from each of the workgroups:

  • Community Bill of Rights
  • Study Group
  •  Home Rule Charter Taskforce
  •  Sponsorship of the film series on GMO’s and in support of I-522
  • Other projects

Important information will be provided about the on-going public education project of the Home Rule Charter Taskforce.  Members of the taskforce have formed a Ballot Measure Committee (legal state registered) in order to raise funds to pay for educational materials, advertising, and other expenses. The Ballot Measure Committee is called “Yes! On Home Rule” The group  will act outside of the CRC umbrella and will have its own website with links to campaign materials and candidate information. This committee will be able to collect donations, keep accurate financial records, and file follow-up paperwork with the PDC while advocating for the passage of a Home Rule Charter in Jefferson  County.

The Home Rule Task Force (the original group of the CRC) will be sponsoring 3 public “Meet the Candidate” forums in September and October.  These will be PUBLIC INFORMATION forums that allow the candidates in each district to present their statements and platforms and also to answer questions from the public.

The “Yes! On Home Rule” committee will be holding a volunteer strategy meeting to plan future events and activities.  All friends are welcome to attend.  The Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 28th at the Tri-Area Center in Chimacum.  The meeting will start at 6:00 PM.

Important County-wide meeting for all potential Freeholders

IMPORTANT UPCOMING COMMUNITY MEETINGS:

don't forgetCharter information meeting to be presented by Jefferson County personnel for potential Freeholders: MONDAY AUGUST 12th at 6:00PM in the Superior Court at the Jefferson County court house. Jefferson county personnel will present the rules for applying for Home Rule Charter Freeholder.  Packets of information will be passed out.  Forms that need to be filled out will be distributed.

AGENDA ITEMS INCLUDE:

  • Update on the Community Bill of Rights process from the Community Bill of Rights taskforce.
  • Update on the Home Rule Charter progress including a report back on a well attended Freeholder and Home Rule information meeting held on Wednesday, August 7th at the Tri-Area Center in Chimacum.
  • Next steps for the finding qualified Freeholders who will create a charter that will bring the right to Initiative and referendum to the people of this county, include a bare-bones Bill of Rights into the initial charter, and create an initial charter that will be easily pass by the voters in future.  Strategy for helping the charter and freeholder process to pass this November 5th.
  • The Home Rule Charter taskforce will be at the Jefferson County Fair this next weekend.
  • Other agenda items may be added

  • Study Group – Every Tuesday 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the QUUF
  • Community Bill of Rights taskforce – Thursdays – 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Port Townsend Community Center.
  • Charter Taskforce – Contact Val Phimister  Meetings are held at irregular times depending on the projects in motion. – Looking for boots on the ground members – this is not a study group.

Next meeting of the CRC General Assembly- Saturday July 27th

crc logo welcomThe General Assembly of the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson county will meet July 27th, 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Port Townsend, Washington … 2333 San Juan Avenue. We meet every two weeks.  We will be entertaining new proposals, getting updates on the Home Rule Chartering initiative, learning about the Community Bill of Rights project, and hearing from the study group.   Join us if you can.

Other CRC meetings held – BILL OF RIGHTS TASK FORCE-Meets every Thursday at 5:30  at Port Townsend Community Center.  STUDY GROUP: Meets every Tuesday 5:30PM at QUUF-(2333 San Juan Ave).  The Chartering Work group meets often and is close to obtaining enough signatures on a petition to place the issue of home rule on the November ballot.

  • Please bring food to share, your own dishes and silverware (we want to make it simple for clean-up)
  • And BRING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS AND YOUR WILLINGNESS TO CELEBRATE IN COMMUNITY
  • BRING A FRIEND WHO MAY BE INTERESTED IN OUR CRC MOVEMENT AND WANT TO MEET US LESS FORMALLY THAN AT A GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The next General Assembly Meeting of The Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County is July 13th – join us!

democracy hands with borderThe next General Assembly Meeting of the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County will be held Saturday July 13th at 9:30 A.M.

Special speaker will be Phil Johnson, Jefferson County Commissioner.  He will be giving an update on the Salmon Net Pens issue.  He will speak at the beginning of the  meeting.  The regular meeting of the GA will occur after his talk.

Regular business:  We will have an update on the Chartering or “Home Rule” signature gathering progress and update on the first meeting of the creation of a Community Bill of Rights.  More information will be given about the upcoming (July 20th) CRC first annual summer picnic.

Also to be discussed is a back  on the July 4th parade action to support I- 522 – The GMO labeling initiative to be voted on this fall in the state of Washington. Members of the CRC attended this action in Port Angeles.
