CRC General Assembly to meet April 19th- update on Weed board proposal to increase thier budget

don't forgetIt’s that time again…

The next meeting of the General Assembly of the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County will be held this Saturday, April 19th, 2014 – 10:00 AM.  Please join us at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hall – 2333 San Juan Avenue Port Townsend, WA.  All Friends are Welcome

Various agenda items will be discussed:

  • Upcoming meeting of the Jefferson County Noxious Weed board – they will hold a public hearing on the proposed taxation of county landowners to increase their budget from around $13,000 a year to over $90,000.  They will also ask the county board of commissioners to pay for a consultant to implement the assessment of landowners in the county.  Members of the CRC and Jefferson County Ecological Roadside (JCER) have great concern over the increase of a budget that may pay for more distribution of toxins on our county roads and rights-of-way.  Each year the Noxious Weed board has increased it’s use of chemicals such as glyphosate-based herbicides to destroy unwanted plants.  The hearing will be held on Monday, April 21 at the Jefferson County Library in Port Hadlock located at 620 Cedar Avenue and Ness’s Corner Road in Port Hadlock.  The meeting will start at 5:30 PM.

AGENDA FOR A NEW YEAR – Community Rights for all sentient beings and Nature

Here are a few of the issues that will be addressed in the coming months by the Jefferson County Community Rights Coalition.

– The CRC will develop a process of how we will communicate. We will be inviting a community person with experience to lead us through this process. We will develop a values-based process using consensus and peaceful collaboration.  The study group proposes that we put on a facilitated workshop to hone in on our commonly held values. This is the first step in the “Formal Consensus Process” outlined in workbook On Conflict and Consensus.

– The CRC will look at the City Initiative and Referendum Process

– The CRC will be Connecting with other community groups such as 20/20 and the local foods movement as well as Occupy Port Townsend. The goal is collaboration, cooperation, and resilency.

– JET NOISE from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. The CRC is joining with other community groups including those on Bainbridge and Island Counties to advocate for the reduction and stoppage of low-flying jets over Puget sound communities. The CRC will announce meetings to be held on Growler Jet Noise and the Environmental Impact Statement Process.

– GMO FISH BAN – The CRC will be exploring a proposed law in Olympia that would ban genetically modified salmon from being grown in the state of WA. The people are interested in this – so hopefully it will come out of committee.

– GMO seeds and labeling – Support efforts to protect local seed companies and farmers who are raising organic non-GMO seeds.

– COUNTY ROAD HERBICIDE SPRAY ISSUE – County commissioner David Sullivan offered to hold a public forum on the spray issue, a group will be forming to look at that. O’Neill will see if the no spray people would be willing to follow up on this.

– Actively oppose NET PENS

– XL PIPELINE AND COAL TRAINS – Actively oppose Fossil Fuel shipping through our region and through areas of Canada and the US that is destroying the environment

– LOCAL FOODS MOVEMENT – Support efforts to help local farmers develop a sustainable local foods movement.

– FOOD STAMPS CUTS – Actively support low-income residents who are losing the ability to purchase food because of massive cuts to food stamps.

native woman kneeling with feather in front of RCMPThe Next meeting of the General Assembly of the Community Rights Coalition of Jefferson County will be December 14th.  All meetings will be 9:30 AM to 11:30 am at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hall –  2333 San Juan Avenue Port Townsend, WA. All Friends are Welcome!

Calling all activists with a powerful beating heart of change. Please attend this meeting.

” I don’t think there is anything as powerful as an active heart. And the activists I know possess this powerful beating heart of change. They do not fear the wisdom of emotion, but embody it. They know how to listen. They are polite when they need to be and unyielding when necessary. They remain open, even as they push boundaries and inhabit the margins, understanding eventually, the margins will move toward the center. They are tenacious, informed, patient, and impatient, at once. They do not shy away from what is difficult. They refuse to accept the unacceptable. The most effective activists I know are in love with the world.” – Terry Tempest Williams – “Beauty Feeds a Different Kind of Hunger”: An Interview with Terry Tempest Williams

Community Rights Coalition General Assembly Saturday, November 30th

trees and women river walkingRegrouping! – Community Rights Coalition activities for the next week:

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 30th –  General Assembly – 9:30 AM to 11:30 am at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hall –  2333 San Juan Avenue Port Townsend, WA.  Agenda includes ongoing discussion about how to bring more grassroots voice to the people. Report back from Tuesday night  study group.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3 – The Community Rights Coalition Study group meets on Tuesday Nights at 5:30 PM at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship hall. Discussion about consensus process and readings from READ THE DIRT and the national Community Rights movement.  Here is an excerpt from the November issue of READ THE DIRT –  Washington State attempts to sell Columbia River water for $6 million: Those appealing argue state can’t sell rivers, favor corporate farms over family farms.

“The waters of the state are already over-appropriated, but still Ecology continues to issue new water rights – often under political pressure to do so,” said Lee Bernheisel of the appellant Okanogan Wilderness League.

Update (November 4, 2013): Okanogan Wilderness League has filed an appeal of a new water right decision, challenging the Washington Department of Ecology’s authority to issue water rights from the Columbia River that are not conditioned on maintaining instream flows.

The appeal also challenges Ecology’s use of “out-of-kind” mitigation that allows the user to pay into a state fund for habitat restoration projects instead of curtailing pumping when river flows are too low. The price? $35.00 for every 325,000 gallons sold, or, pumped.
